Shine your light for social cohesion

12 November 2018, Manchester

UDHR Article 1 states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” Article 28 affirms that “Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.”

In the setting of Manchester as the UK’s most diverse city, this event shines a light on the role that human rights and youth play in building and sustaining social inclusion and cohesion.

12 November 2018 — The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kate Gilmore launched the month of celebration for the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Manchester, one of the world’s most diverse cities. The “Shine Your Light” campaign is a series of events around the world focused on human rights. The conversations in Manchester highlighted “Our rights to live in harmony” – which Manchester exemplifies. These “Shine Your Light” events also illustrate the important role that human rights and youth play in building and sustaining social inclusion and cohesion.
