Convention on Rights of the Child turns 30

This year is a milestone in the rights of children, a moment that calls for us all to renew our commitment to the rights of children. 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989, protects the rights of all children, everywhere from discrimination, violence and neglect. It states that children need to be treated with dignity and respect; that they should be cared for, develop and be part of their communities and that children have a right to education, among other things.

One hundred and ninety-six UN Member States have ratified the Convention; making it the most adopted of all human rights treaties.

The anniversary creates a momentum for the international community to step up its efforts to make children thrive and to renew and renew their commitment to protect and promote all human rights. The UN Human Rights Office celebrates 30 years of the Convention by telling the story of children’s rights through promoting awareness, reflecting on the legacy of the Convention and engaging children, their parents and others to #standup4humanrights.

Much has been achieved in the 30 years since the treaty was ratified, but significant challenges remain particularly for girls, children with disabilities and children in disadvantaged and vulnerable situations.
